Do you remember the original park hotel, the Saturday night shows or the crazy guy who ran the show? Perhaps you remember the Park Hotel of the 1980’s when it was actually cool for local women to be seen with older male gringos.
Older expatriates often say that the Park Hotel was simply the only upscale hotel in San Jose were you could bring a date to your room in those early days.
Over the decades the Park simply attracted a following as men would return again and again to the same place.
The original Park Hotel was a place where a gringo could feel safe, entertain ladies, and never had to leave because everything could be enjoyed within the walls of the complex. Imagine enjoying a beer with your fellow expatriates while talking about current events like a war in Nicaragua, or the Reagan administration.
The view from the bar was outstanding, proving the American man on vacation with window from which to watch life in San Jose.
Of course everything changed with the construction of the Hotel Del Rey. Details of the Park Hotel, which had been built by word of mouth started to spread on the Internet. Competition, however was spreading through San Jose as expats poured into Costa Rica to setup businesses. The hotel also changed hands in 1997, and the new business owner did not have a long term plan.
The original Hotel Park closed in 2004, and was stripped to the boards and paint. It remained closed for several years until in 2007 the building was rented, and an attempt was made to recreate the business. This was unfortunately a short lived disaster, and the building was finally remodeled as a cheap clothing store.
