Local currency in the Dominican Republic is the peso (DOP), which is often abbreviated as RD$. Each peso is divided into 100 centavos or cents, and the smallest bill is the 20 peso note. In 2010, a new 20 peso note was issued on a plastic polymer. However, at this time the rest of the currency is still paper.
Exchange rates at the airport, both in United States and locally in POP airport may not be the best deal. There are many ATM machines in the Dominican Republic, but banks usually charge percentages for foreign exchange.
